Our Treatments

At Performance Advantage massage therapy is fundamental to our treatment plans for our patients. Not only does massage relax the muscles surrounding the joints but there are forms of massage therapy that can actually strengthen the muscles and increase blood flow to the injured area to promote faster healing. Our massage therapists have a diversified background which now includes working in a sports performance center. In our center they get to use their massage training in a fashion to promote wellness but also physical performance.

Cupping therapy is combined with massage to promote and increase the speed of healing. With massage being a compressive treatment, cupping provides the opposite. The suction decompresses fascia tissue by creating space between muscles and skin, which draws new blood supply to the area. This provides benefits like increasing blood flow, treating sore muscles, and drawing out toxins. During a massage, your therapist might apply the cups to one area while
continuing massage in another.
So how does it work?
The treatment consists of heating a glass cup and placing it on the skin of the affected area for several minutes. To heat the cup the therapist will ignite material inside the cup, then put it out before placing it upside down on the skin. The heat within the glass cooling creates a vacuum. The suction then causes the skin to rise and blood vessels to expand. While the heat should not cause irritation, the suction may cause slight discomfort until the cup is moved.
Discoloration may appear and is normal. This is a good sign that toxins are being pulled to the skin’s surface for release.
Post-Treatment?
After treatment, the cups will leave marks on the skin. These can last anywhere from one week to several weeks. The marks are a result of the suction of the skin which creates broken blood vessels, or a bruise. This means discoloration and redness will be noticeable. The color of the bruise is an indication of tissue health. Darker bruises indicate unhealthy tissue, while lighter bruises indicate healthier tissue. Throughout treatment, you will notice lighter and lighter bruises
showing that toxins are gone and tissue is healthier. Before receiving cupping, make sure to discuss with your massage therapist of sensitive skin or time sensitive events in which you don’t want large marks on your skin.
